Managing Icons

An Icon View window gives you many ways to arrange and inspect its icons. Each is described below.

Sorting Icons

Choose the Sort menu to order icons by name, type, size, or date. The order you pick is remembered for that directory.

Resizing Icons

Choose "Larger" or "Smaller" from the View menu to change the size the icons are drawn at. Larger icons show more of a thumbnail; smaller icons fit more in the window.

Viewing File Information

Select an icon and choose "Get Info" from the Selected menu to see its size, type, owner, and dates in a panel.

Displaying Icons in Columns

Choose "as List" from the View menu to lay the icons out in named columns: name, size, type, and date. Click a column heading to sort by it.

Displaying "Thumbnails" of Image Files

For image files, the File Manager can draw a small preview of the picture in place of the generic icon. Choose "Thumbnails" from the View menu to turn this on. Large directories of images fill in as each thumbnail is made.

Displaying a Quick View of a File

Select a file and choose "Quick View" to see its contents in a small pane without opening the full application. This is handy for text and images.

Viewing Hidden Files

Files whose names begin with a dot are hidden by default. Choose "Show Hidden Files" from the View menu to reveal them.

Searching for Icons by Name

Click the Find button on the toolbar, or choose "Find" from the View menu, then type part of a name. Matching icons are selected as you type, and the window scrolls to the first match.
