Anatomy of the Icon View Window

Every Icon View window carries the same menu bar. This section names each menu and what it holds.

About Icon View Menus

The menu bar has four menus: Actions, Selected, Sort, and View. Actions and View act on the window and its directory; Selected acts on whatever icons you have selected; Sort sets their order.

The Actions Menu

Holds commands that act on the window or the directory as a whole: New Folder, Open Location, Paste as File, and Find.

The Selected Menu

Holds commands that act on the selected icons: Open, Get Info, Permissions, Rename, Make a Reference, and Remove. The items are insensitive when nothing is selected.

The Sort Menu

Sets the order of the icons: by Name, by Type, by Size, or by Date. See Sorting Icons.

The View Menu

Sets how the icons are drawn: as Icons or as List, Larger or Smaller, Thumbnails on or off, Show Hidden Files, and Show Shelf.
