Command Line

The panel has a full headless half. Everything below runs without opening the panel, and most of it without a display.

cyfont-prefs --list installed schemes: name, system or user, path
cyfont-prefs --dirs the search path, in precedence order
cyfont-prefs --print the current role table
cyfont-prefs --resolve DESC what one descriptor really lands on
cyfont-prefs --state the font scheme the daemon is publishing
cyfont-prefs --apply NAME switch the whole desktop, from a script
cyfont-prefs --save PATH write the current table to a file
cyfont-prefs --scheme NAME open the panel on this scheme
cyfont-prefs --core-only resolve as a canonical application will
cyfont-prefs --puppet CMD drive a running panel, for test harnesses

--scheme takes a bare name as listed by --list, or a path to a .cyfont file. --apply and --save take the same. With --scheme, --save is a scheme copier; without it, it writes the built-in defaults.

--puppet takes one of load=NAME, saveas=NAME, save, revert, defaults or apply, and drives a panel that is already running on this screen.

Standard flags: --help, -V, --selftest, --log=SPEC, --verbose, --quiet. Anything the panel does not claim is handed to the X Toolkit, so -display, -geometry and -xrm work as usual.

Some Worked Examples

Find out why the list is empty:

cyfont-prefs --dirs

Print a scheme's nine bindings without opening a window:

cyfont-prefs --scheme heros --print

Copy a shipped scheme into your own directory to edit:

cyfont-prefs --scheme heros --save ~/.cyanotype/cyfont/rivendell.cyfont

Keys

On the Main Panel

The main panel installs no accelerators and no mnemonics. Only the scheme list responds to the keyboard.

Up, Down move the selection, loading each scheme as you pass
Page Up, Page Down a screenful at a time
Home, End the first or last scheme
Wheel up, down scroll the list

The buttons cannot be activated from the keyboard. Apply, Save, Save As, Revert, Defaults, Close, Help and all nine Change... buttons must be clicked. This is a real limitation of the panel today.

In the Font Dialog

The font dialog is the one place with a full keyboard surface.

Escape Cancel
Return OK, except in the Size and Font name fields, where it
              commits what you typed
F1 Help
Alt+F go to the Family list
Alt+S go to the Style list
Alt+Z go to the Size list
Alt+E go to the Size field
Alt+N go to the Font name field
Alt+U, Alt+O choose Outline (Xft)
Alt+V choose Server (XLFD)
Alt+K OK
Alt+C Cancel
Alt+H Help

Note that Alt+O is a second binding for Outline, not for OK. OK is Alt+K.
