Moving Windows Between Desks

In the Desks Overview, drag a window's little rectangle out of one desk cell and drop it into another. The window moves to that desk. This is the quick way to gather related windows onto one desk without switching back and forth.

While you drag, an outline the size of the miniature follows the pointer. The outline appears only once you have moved far enough for the gesture to be a drag rather than a click, so a click never flashes a box at you.

Dropping in the cell you started from does nothing. Dropping outside every cell does nothing.

The Global Desk

Dropping a window on the Global desk makes it sticky, meaning it shows on every desk at once. This is useful for a clock, a monitor, or anything you want in view no matter which desk you are on. Drag it back off the Global desk and onto an ordinary desk to pin it to that desk again.

The Global cell can be hidden if you do not use it; see Size, Orientation, and Labels and Setting Preferences.

Click, Double-Click and Drag

Button 1 on a miniature window does three different things depending on what you do next, and the rule is simple once stated.

press and release, no movement switch to that desk
press and move drag it to another desk
press twice, quickly switch to that desk

A single click on a miniature has to be able to begin a drag, or you could never grab a window without being teleported to its desk. So the drag is armed on the press and the switch happens on the release, if you never moved. The double-click is the unambiguous "I meant go there".

Dragging onto the Global cell makes the window sticky rather than moving it, as above.

Not Only From Here

The window manager can send the focused window to a desk directly:

Super+Shift+1 .. Super+Shift+0 Send window to desk 1 to 10
Ctrl+Alt+s Toggle sticky window

Those are the stock chords; see the MenuShortcuts book. The Window menu on the overview names the same verbs, but its items are not live yet; see The Menus.

See Switching Desks to move yourself, rather than a window, between desks.
