Documentation / Install
Blueprint Desktop 1.1.0 for Solaris 8, 32-bit SPARC. Cut on 1 November 2026 from tip 1178a1dc, on a Sun Ultra 60. libgcc is static. Motif, X11, and GL stay shared with the host. This is not a 64-bit package, and it is not a Solaris 10 package.
CDE Motif in /usr/dt and OpenWindows in /usr/openwin. pkgadd will not install either of them. A Solaris 8 desktop install already has both. The programs are linked to look in /usr/dt/lib and /usr/openwin/lib, so you do not set LD_LIBRARY_PATH for those two directories.
The shared libraries this cut still needs from the host:
libXm.so.4 /usr/dt/lib libX11.so.4 /usr/openwin/lib (also under /usr/lib) libXext.so.0 /usr/openwin/lib libXt.so.4 /usr/openwin/lib libXmu.so.4 /usr/openwin/lib libXtst.so.1 /usr/openwin/lib libICE.so.6 /usr/openwin/lib libSM.so.6 /usr/openwin/lib libGL.so.1 /usr/openwin/lib (also under /usr/lib) libdga.so.1 /usr/openwin/lib libpam.so.1 /usr/lib libcmd.so.1 /usr/lib
From the downloads page. Four of these are the same desktop in different wrappers. You do not need all four.
The .pkg.gz file is gzip of the .pkgstream file. Uncompressed, the bytes match. Do not pkgadd the .gz itself. Solaris 8 pkgadd does not gunzip.
SHA256SUMS lists every file. Each line is the SHA-256 digest, two spaces, then the name. Solaris 8 has no sha256sum in the base OS. If OpenSSL is installed:
openssl dgst -sha256 cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkg.gz
Compare that digest to the pkg.gz line. Do the same for whichever other file you fetched. Do not install a file that does not match.
You have to be root. The package name is cyanotype. Pick one of the three shapes.
Gzip of the datastream. gunzip writes cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkg next to it:
gunzip cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkg.gz pkgadd -d cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkg cyanotype
Or the uncompressed datastream, no gunzip:
pkgadd -d cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkgstream cyanotype
Or the package directory. Solaris tar does not open gzip. The archive contains a cyanotype directory, and pkgadd -d wants the directory that holds that directory:
mkdir cy-pkg cd cy-pkg gzip -dc ../cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkg.tgz | tar -xvf - pkgadd -d . cyanotype
pkgadd asks questions unless you give it the admin file. That file tells it not to stop, and it skips the dependency and conflict checks. It does not install Motif or OpenWindows. Those still have to be on the machine. Put solaris-pkgadd.admin where the -a path can see it:
pkgadd -a solaris-pkgadd.admin -n -d cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkgstream cyanotype
Files land in /usr/local. Remove the package later with:
pkgrm cyanotype
Same desktop, no pkgadd. Make a work directory. Solaris tar does not open gzip.
mkdir cyanotype-1.1.0 cd cyanotype-1.1.0 gzip -dc ../cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
You get cyanotype.install, cyanotype.license, cyanotype.readme, cyanotype.remove, cyanotype.ss, and cyanotype.sw. As root:
./cyanotype.install
It prints the copyright, asks if you want to continue, and installs into /usr/local. ./cyanotype.install now accepts the license without the prompts. The install script puts /usr/xpg4/bin on its own PATH. You still need gzip to unpack the outer archive.
From that same directory, as root, ./cyanotype.remove takes this install back off.
CyLogin is in the package and is not turned on. This install does not replace the CDE greeter. Leave dtlogin alone unless you have decided to change the console login.
CYANOTYPE_EPM_ENABLE_CYLOGIN=yes pkgadd -a solaris-pkgadd.admin -n -d cyanotype-1.1.0-solaris-sparc.pkgstream cyanotype
The same variable works in front of ./cyanotype.install now. Or later, as root:
/usr/local/bin/cylogin-enable
Read Setting Up CyLogin before you enable it.
The session command is /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh. It starts the window manager and the rest of the desk, and it waits on the window manager. When the window manager exits, the session ends. The first run creates ~/.cyanotype for that account.
Run it as the X session, not from a terminal inside CDE's window manager. /usr/openwin/bin/xinit is the one to use:
/usr/openwin/bin/xinit /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh
That leaves the CDE greeter out of it. If you later want this as the normal login session, the session file has to exec the same command. Do not point dtlogin at it until you have seen the desk come up once on its own.
Solaris 8 does not put /usr/local/bin on the default PATH. Use the full path, or add it. cyhelp is in that directory. The books on this site are the same text.
After you have replaced binaries in a desk that is already up, /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh --restart reloads the desk and does not kill the window manager.
Programs you want started with the desk, and only on a cold start, go in ~/.cyanotype/startup/ as executable files. They run in name order after the desk is up. --restart does not run them again.
