Quick start: IRIX 6.5

Documentation / Install

Blueprint Desktop 1.1.0 for IRIX 6.5, MIPS, n32. Cut on 31 October 2026 from tip 143893db, on an SGI O2. It installs under /usr/local and uses the X and Motif that come with IRIX.

Get the files

From the downloads page:

The tardist is a plain tar file. Do not gunzip it. The portable archive is gzip.

SHA256SUMS lists every file on that page. Each line is the SHA-256 digest, two spaces, then the name. Check the files you downloaded before you install them. Stock IRIX has no sha256sum. If you have OpenSSL:

openssl dgst -sha256 cyanotype-1.1.0-mips-irix-6.5.tardist

The digest has to match the tardist line. Same check for the portable archive if you use that one. Do not install a file that does not match.

Install with inst

You have to be root. The product name is cyanotype. The tardist carries two images: cyanotype.sw, the software, and cyanotype.man, the man pages.

inst -f cyanotype-1.1.0-mips-irix-6.5.tardist

inst opens on that distribution. New software is marked for install. At the Inst prompt:

go
quit

Files land in /usr/local. The man pages land in /usr/local/share/man. If inst stops on a conflict, read what it printed. Do not force past a conflict you have not looked at.

To remove it later, start inst on the same tardist and remove both images, then go:

remove cyanotype.sw cyanotype.man
go

Or the portable archive

Same bits, different wrapper. Make a work directory so the five install files do not land in whatever directory you are standing in. IRIX tar does not open gzip itself.

mkdir cyanotype-1.1.0
cd cyanotype-1.1.0
gzip -dc ../cyanotype-1.1.0-mips-irix-6.5.tar.gz | tar -xvf -

You get cyanotype.install, cyanotype.license, cyanotype.readme, cyanotype.remove, cyanotype.ss, and cyanotype.sw. As root:

./cyanotype.install

It prints the copyright, asks if you want to continue, and installs into /usr/local. ./cyanotype.install now accepts the license without the prompts. You have to be root either way.

From that same directory, as root, ./cyanotype.remove takes the portable install back off.

CyLogin stays off

CyLogin, the graphical login, is in the package and is not turned on. Leave it off if the machine already has a login you use. The SGI login and xdm are not replaced by this install.

If you mean to switch the console login, set this in the environment of the install command:

CYANOTYPE_EPM_ENABLE_CYLOGIN=yes ./cyanotype.install now

Or later, as root:

/usr/local/bin/cylogin-enable

Read Setting Up CyLogin before you do that. It is a replacement for the console login, not an extra menu inside the desk you already have.

Start the desk

The session command is /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh. It starts the window manager and the rest of the desk, and it waits on the window manager. When the window manager exits, the session ends. The first run creates ~/.cyanotype for that account.

This is the X session, not a program you launch from inside another window manager. If you start X yourself:

xinit /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh

If a display manager logs you in, put this in the session file it runs (~/.xinitrc, or ~/.xsession where that is what the manager uses):

exec /usr/local/bin/startcyanotype.sh

If the shell cannot find the short name, /usr/local/bin is not on PATH. The full path works. cyhelp is in that same directory, and the books on this site are the same text.

After you have replaced binaries in a desk that is already up, startcyanotype.sh --restart reloads the desk and does not kill the window manager.

Programs you want started with the desk, and only on a cold start, go in ~/.cyanotype/startup/ as executable files. They run in name order after the desk is up. --restart does not run them again.

Other systems: Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris.
