Applying, Resetting, and Closing

Four buttons: Apply, Close, Reset ... and Help.

Apply

Apply writes your settings to the configuration file and then tells the sound daemon about them. The daemon picks up the volume, the mute and the category switches immediately, and switches scheme if you chose a different one.

Settings saved and sent to the sound daemon.

If no daemon is running, the settings are still saved and the panel says so rather than pretending:

Settings saved (no sound daemon is running yet).

Nothing on this panel takes effect until you press Apply. Moving the volume slider does not change the volume by itself.

Close

Close quits at once. It does not save and it does not ask about unsaved changes. Press Apply first.

Reset ...

Reset opens a small dialog titled "Reset Control Panel". It asks:

Reset Control Panel To:
  (*) Previous Settings
  ( ) Factory Settings

Previous Settings is selected by default each time the dialog opens.

OK applies the choice to the controls; Cancel closes the dialog and changes nothing.

Reset changes the CONTROLS only. Neither branch writes the configuration file. Press Apply afterwards to make a reset stick.

Help

The Help button arms click-for-help mode rather than opening a book. The button turns yellow; roll the pointer over a control to see one line about it; click Help again to turn it off.

Every control on the panel carries such a line. They also appear on the message line at the bottom whenever the pointer passes over a control, with no need to arm anything.

Keyboard

There are no accelerators and no mnemonics on this panel, and no F1 key. Every control is operated with the mouse.
