CyStar

Text editor

CyStar is the text editor. The canvas is CyText, from libcyui, rather than Motif's XmText. One process holds one window, and that window holds up to a dozen documents as tabs. A second window is a second process.

The keys are a subset of Joe 4.6, and The chords come from the WordStar design. ^K handles blocks and files: begin and end a block, copy, move, delete, write the block out, filter it through a shell, rectangular blocks, save, save and exit, and open. ^Q is find and motion. In that map, ^G is the keys help. The map that ships turned on is Windows / Notepad. Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-S, and Ctrl-Q or Alt-F4 win when they collide with a Joe chord, and the Joe chords that do not use those keys still work. An old configuration with windows_cut_paste off, and no keymap key, comes up as Joe / WordStar. Preferences live in the editor, under Options, rather than in a separate program.

This editor does not print, and it does not do syntax coloring. Scheme colors are desktop roles, such as the title bar, not a language highlighter. It also does not carry the rest of Joe 4.6. An unknown chord is named on the message line, so you can see what you hit. Bookmarks are not saved. Spell check is optional, and it stays off unless you turn it on. It uses hunspell if that is on PATH, otherwise aspell, otherwise ispell. Recovery autosave stays off unless you ask for it, and then it writes a sibling file named .basename.cystar-recover. Help is the in-app Keys and Shortcuts page, plus the CyHelp book.

The normal face follows the desktop color scheme. That is the first picture. Color Preferences are optional high-contrast overrides on top of that scheme: Pace-1984 (yellow on black), CRT-Murch-1987 (phosphor green on black), Whattananarong-1991 (yellow on blue), and Mom Colors (black on paper, which is the look people ask for when they want the other operating system). Those are the later pictures. They are not the default.

CyStar following the desktop scheme. The canvas is Icy Blue Mountains, and this is the normal face.

Pace-1984, yellow on black. This is a Color Preferences override, not the desktop scheme.

CRT-Murch-1987, phosphor green on black. Another Color Preferences override.

Whattananarong-1991, yellow on blue. Another override, still not the desktop scheme.

Mom Colors, black on paper. This is the override people ask for when they want the look of the other operating system.
