Startup and end session
CySplash is the startup splash. It does not launch the session. The session script starts CyWM, the chest, the filer, and the rest, and it writes the pid files. CySplash watches those pid files and draws the checklist while those programs are starting.
The same program is the end-session panel, where you log out, reboot, or shut down. It also reads a few plain facts off the host (CPU, memory, audio, and the display) and shows them on that sheet. It is a status face, not a second process manager. The picture here is the keyboard-shortcuts overlay, drawn over the desk. Esc dismisses it. The startup checklist is the other face, and it is shown while the session is starting.

The end-session panel: log out, shut down, reboot, or cancel. This is the panel the desktop opens.
